We spent the night in Meghri, the southernmost town in Armenia. We were all divided into groups of 4 or 5 and each group spent the night with a local family. That is Sarkiss on the right (from Syria), Marcelo in the middle (from Argentina), Christine on the left (a local, from Yerevan) Tsoline behind that door in the back and me behind the camera. It is very unusual to have a co-ed group in a single house, but we were split up into different rooms. They fed us breakfast of tea, eggs, bread, cheese, fruit and - yes - Vodka. You can see the bottle and the shot glassed at the front of the table.

The southern region of Armenia and Meghri especially is well known for its fruit we spent the weekend picking pomegranates off of trees. They fed us these figs and persimmons with breakfast. They were extremely delicious.

And outside they were drying mountains of figs for the winter or to sell.

They had half a dozen persimmon trees in their front yard.

And they peeled them and hung them on string to dry them. My good friend Justin goes persimmon picking every fall and tries to do this at our house in San Francisco, but they usually just mold in the humid San Franciscian air. Here is dry Armenia, the seem to be doing much better.

That is four of us and the man who hosted us for the evening posing for a picture. After the picture was taken we went out for a day of exploring.
