From the No Borders Camp: Breakfast at the Border
by Seth Porcello
Posted 11/12/07

I got this radio documentary from the indybay website, the Bay Area version of the indymedia independent media websites. I am not sure who Seth Porcello is, but I wanted to post an audio clip from the No Borders camp. He threw together a good little program quite quickly. After I left the camp things went a bit sour and people assaulted by Border Patrol agents and arrested (you can check that out at the noborders website) but I wanted to focus on the camp itself. This clip gives a good overview. For more clips, try going here.

Here is a rough overview of the camp that I lifted from indymedia:

No Borders was an action camp, but the camp itself was also action. It is not just about the US - Mexico border, but all borders that divide and control people. it is about a regime that allows the free flow of capitol while dividing families and forcing people underground and limiting their movement. The camp intended to manifest resistance and its participants to learn and develop strategies, alliances, and friendships; to try to create a world without borders.

If you look in the top picture, you can see the American side of the camp on the right and Mexico on the left (the Mexican half of the camp is behind the camera). If you look to the back of the camp, you can see the metal awning that was the media center which had half a dozen computers, internet access, and a live radio station feeding the camp. The bottom picture shows the line that the Border Patrol was guarding. Left is Mexico, right is the US.

The sound journal is intended to be a showcase of sounds and songs, (usually) posted late every Monday night. If you have a piece of music you have recorded, a radio show that you've done, a weird song that your cat sings, a story you want to read, or any tidbit of sound that you have found particularly of note, drop us a line. We would love to share it.
